In her early years, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away in a tragic way, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to be a waitress or cleaner to help them be able to survive. Ruth attended the school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. However, she left school after just two years to pursue an acting career. Her path to success turned out be filled with challenges such as in New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her. She made enough money as an usherette in the morning, while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. Drama studies led her to receive a degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
